Raleigh Fayette
Child Protection Alliance

Just for Kids coordinates this primary prevention program to promote positive family interaction, raise awareness about local resources and increase community involvement in child abuse prevention. This program is guided by a team made up of both professionals and concerned citizens that believe that the best way to reduce child abuse is to reduce the risks. We are funded by a Partners In Prevention grant from Prevent Child Abuse WV.

We participate in a variety of community events with activities for children and information for parents. Each year we sponsor a Child Abuse Prevention Month Kick off luncheon where we bring together various members of the community to talk about ways that we can all be more involved in prevention efforts. At this luncheon we also honor members of the community who have been instrumental in our prevention efforts for the previous year with our "Gold Star Award". In April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month, we partner with the Register Herald to produce a newspaper insert that is distributed to all schools in Raleigh and Fayette Counties. The insert offers an essay contest for students of all ages as well as information and resource numbers for parents.

Raleigh/Fayette Child Protection Alliance (CPA) Gold Star Award

First established in 2006, this award is given to individuals, businesses, or other organizations (outside of the normal CPA team) in Raleigh and Fayette Counties. The winning recipient should have helped promote the previous year’s child abuse prevention efforts of the Raleigh-Fayette Child Protection Alliance (ex: the 2007 award will recognize 2006 efforts). CPA members can present nominees and the group will vote on the winner. The award is presented at the Kick-Off Luncheon. The recipient(s) receive an individual plaque and their name is also added to the plaque that is displayed at the Just for Kids, Inc. Raleigh Office.

2006 Winner: Claytina Shepherd, 1st Grade Teacher Maxwell Hill Elementary School.
Ms. Shepherd embraced the “Reaching Out” newspaper and encourage her class and the other classes to complete the newspaper and all of its prevention activities. Her input helped us improve our prevention newspaper.

2007 Winners: Southern Communications and WV Wireless
Collaboratively these two businesses helped us promote child abuse prevention during April 2006. With the urging of Southern Communication, West Virginia Wireless invited the CPA Team Leader to three live remote broadcasts, enabling our team to reach hundreds of radio listeners---an audience that we have not been able to reach in past years. Without their progressive thinking and willingness to do what they could our message would have been limited. WV Wireless even helped distribute our Prevention Resource Packets.

2008 Lori Pace, Professor, Concord University
In 2007 Mrs. Pace helped promote prevention with her college students. After inviting CPA representatives to her classes to speak about child abuse prevention she encouraged her students to volunteer. With her encouragement her students helped promote prevention efforts at Tailgate Halloween and the Pre-School Expo. The hundreds of volunteer hours helped us promote prevention with hundreds of children and families in Raleigh and Fayette Counties.

2009 Rhonda Willson, Marketing Director at Crossroads Mall.
Throughout the year Rhonda was instrumental in making sure that the Child Protection Alliance has ample opportunities to participate in mall-sponsored events that reach out to children and families in the community.  Furthermore, Rhonda was able to secure approval for the “It’s Your Turn to Make a Difference” pinwheel display to be set up in the container gardens throughout the mall for two years in a row.  Rhonda’s concern for the well-being of everyone in our community, her special interest in children, as well as her warmth and graciousness in interacting with staff and volunteers of Just For Kids, Inc. and the Raleigh-Fayette Child Protection Alliance made her a most deserving award recipient.
